5 Lawn and Landscaping Care Tips for Fall

Today officially marks the end of summer and the beginning of autumn. As you get ready to welcome the cooler weather, don't forget tot prepare your lawn and landscaping for the winter months. It helps keep your yard healthy and sets it up for success when spring comes back around. Here are five tips about how to get your lawn ready for fall and winter.

1) Give some breathing room.

Aerating your lawn will improve air circulation by decreasing soil compaction. Your soil can get compressed from rain throughout the year. Aerating will created holes that allow water, air, and nutrients to reach the roots. Rake and dethatch your lawn beforehand to rid old debris and reseed bald patches afterwards.

2) Mow a little shorter.

Mowing your lawn shorter than usual helps prevent snow mold and other harmful diseases from growing in the winter time. Shorter grass prevents matting and lets more air reach the soil. Lower your lawn blade 1"-2" shorter than usual until the grass stops growing in later fall or early winter for a healthier lawn in the spring.

3) Clean up and trim.

Be sure to clean out the remnants of old plants and other debris from flower and garden beds to help prevent the spread of disease and eradicate harmful insects. Rake leaves from your yard regularly throughout the fall to allows your lawn to continue the photosynthesis process to stay healthy. Remove any perennial weeds for less growth of them in the spring. And trim all dead or unwanted branches from trees and shrubs to prevent disease and for safety when the snow falls.

4) Put down mulch.

Add a layer of mulch around the base of trees and on top of your garden and flower beds. There are many benefits to putting down mulch. Mulch helps keep your plants and trees from freezing. It can add nutrients to the soil. And it prevents unwanted growth from forming in your garden and flower beds. Add mulch to areas where you are thinking of expanding your lawn projects to in the spring. Don't over mulch or add mulch too early for best results in the spring.

5) Don't forget to water.

Even though it's cooler out, your lawn still needs water to survive. Continue watering your lawn and trees as needed throughout the fall until the ground is frozen or there is the first frost. It's important to keep the ground evenly moist until the lawn goes dormant for the winter. Only water when it's 45 degrees or warmer outside.
